I acquired a French friend on Facebook about three years ago.I have been in Paris for five weeks and we are finally meeting face to face on Thursday. He lives in a small town north of Paris; we are meeting at the train station; stopping by his parents home where he lives; and then meeting some friends of his for dinner in a restaurant. I want to do the correct thing in accordance with French customs. Should I bring a gift for his mother or his mother and father? Should I bring him a gift? He is not fond of wine and is a big fan of American sports.I know nothing about his parents. What is the appropriate thing for me to do? What gift, or gifts, should I bring?
You seem to have done well,so far, Dave. I would go with your instincts. How about a baseball cap/shirt/ball? Maybe he doesn't drink wine but, how about flowers and a decent bottle of Burgundy for his family.
I wish you, at least, an interesting experience; and, at the best, every happiness.
Thanks, Tigger, you always seem to reply to my questions. Sebastien has already proven to be a real friend even though it has all been through our internet connections. I want to thank him for the friendship; I also want to be polite to his parents.
I appreciate all of the suggestions. I will be taking the train out to Pierrelaye so I am not sure that flowers would be good to take. I am thinking a nice box of chocolates for his parents, there is a chocolate shop I have found through Google that is near me. I live in the 18th just off of rue de Clignancourt and I have looked for stores that sell sports memorabilia and/or paraphernalia so I can take something for Sebastien. I can't seem to find anything that looks suitable. Any suggestions?
Chocolates for his parents sounds perfect (especially as they might not drink alcohol). Have you looked at these listings for sports shops? http://paris.angloinfo.com/af/439/paris-and-ile-de-france-sports-equipment-accessories-and-sporting-goods.html I would recommend Citadium for something a bit different for your friend.
