Long Distance Relationship and PACS

kurrren writes in Financial & Legal

Hi There

I am Australian and I have been on a long distance relationship with a French man I met in Sydney for almost 2 years now. I moved to London last year so we have been seeing each other twice a month i.e. he would come to London for a weekend and I would go to Paris for a weekend each month so in a way we have two houses. I want to move to Paris but I would like to secure a job first before I make the move and since I don't speak French it will be very unlikely that I would be eligible for a work visa. I have started applying for jobs at English companies in Paris, hoping that I can get hired with my English Working visa but probably not. I am wondering if my bf and I can get Pacsed eventhough we don't live together? Does anyone know if this is possible?

You will need to take legal advice, but I'm not at all sure that a PACS will solve your work permit problems. Also and I don't wish to be depressing, it's a seriously tough time and there is not much work about. However, it is always worth trying. Also, check out "craigslist", where lots of jobs are advertised. http://paris.en.craigslist.fr/
Good luck!

There are always companies looking for english speaking babysitters http://paris.angloinfo.com/af/705/paris-and-ile-de-france-baby-sitting-nanny-and-au-pair-services.html and tutors, depending on your qualification and experience, also have a look at the employment agency page here as there are some very good english speaking agencies that have always vacancies and would be worth a call http://paris.angloinfo.com/af/437/paris-and-ile-de-france-employment-agencies-and-recruitment.html

Also dont forget that many companies offer french lessons via skype or distance learning as you will need as much french as you can if you settle here...plus you will need to understand your other half !!

But do , please do all your homework first, so that there are not too many suprises... its a big move.......

Very best of luck,

Rosa

Rosalee's input is good. My only worry is that it's difficult to get out of the black market, once you've started with it. However, we all need to, as the French say, "Put butter on our spinach".
Good link from St Paul. Unfortunately it's not that positive, in that, it states that the partners need to be "resident". Maybe you could become "resident", showing that you will support yourself, and then, after a PACS, your circumstances would have changed? I don't know, it's just a theory.
Really, I'd see a notaire.

Agreed, good response from Rosalee but not sure why you bring up working in the 'black market' Tigger, don't think anyone has suggest that.... (agree it is clearly not a good idea though)

Sorry my link was not all that positive Kurren but it is, as Rosalee said, better to have all the facts. Maybe you (or your French boyfriend) needs to speak to the local authorities, who deal with PACS applications, and explain your situation. A lawyer might be a good idea if you or your partner can't make sense of the French system / documentation.
